West End Cricket Club: The "Linkages" Page

"Why Linkages?" Matt Balkwill, with his interpreter Beefy, coined this most interesting add-on phrase on the 1997 Tours' final night. As our then Treasurer Matt drew up a rough accounts-type list, appending the expected column headings with "age". Thus, "Total" became "Totalage," "Fifty" became "Fiftyage," "Cash" became "Cashage," etc, you get the idea. He tried to read them out but our chairman had to take over. However, after "Total Cashchequeage" came the dreaded "Billage..."! All of which leads nowhere except to the links, headed by a few of my own websites.

VILLAGE SCENE New website designed by the industrious Chris Donover specially for West End Village and its surrounding communities, namely Bisley, Brookwood, Chobham and Pirbright. Features advertised job vacancies, items for sale, discussion forums and the vast range of the local businesses and organisations listed, such as our good selves here at WECC.

THE HARE & HOUNDS Our meeting place for games, Committee meetings, even a drink has been enjoyed there on occasion (about 360 days of the year). Terrific pub to be kicked out of.

WEST END SCOUT TROOP Says it all really. We've used their hut on occasion when the Pavilion was not available to us.

VICKERY & CO Currently one of our main sponsors in the village. Local sponsorship is important to us as it enables us to reciprocate promoting of local village affairs.

WEST END VILLAGE SOCIETY Set up nearly thirty years ago, their aim is to "keep our village as a village by making our voice heard at both local and county level". And so say all of us. Their newsletters are all available to read online.

THE INN @ WEST END This is situated on the A322 Bracknell to Guildford Rat Run, opposite the Gordon's School and on the corner of Brentmoor Road's new Traffic-Light Junction To Annoy The Rush-Hour Commuter Scheme. Still the latter allows us to stagger home in comparative safety....

KIMBLE C.C. To be found in the shadow of the Chiltern Hills, south of Aylesbury, Bucks. Play in the Classic Press Cherwell Cricket League. A very entertaining site, if you do nothing else check out their "FAQ". Oh yes, the emblem (right) is called "The Pissing Bear".

BADSHOT LEA C.C. NEW! Based near Farnham in Surrey, these lads toured Newquay in Cornwall recently, so they're OK by us! Plenty of season and tour photos.

BLAGDON C.C. new url This north Somerset club were the Division 1 champions in the Bristol and District league, 2000. This threatens to be a truly great site, very informative and nicely laid out.

WOKING AND HORSELL C.C. This goodly-sized club, formed in 1905, is only a few miles along the road from us. Horsell is separated from Woking by the Basingstoke Canal and they play throughout Surrey and the Thames Valley. We like Horsell. It's home to the "Red Lion" pub.

BISLEY C.C. Our neighbours just up the road. The 1999 season is still available, the page for WECC v. Bisley of that year contains a photo of Di Lamb receiving impromptu batting advice (true, the only time she played for us!). Never updated.

CRICKET CLUBS LIST NEW! Organised by the people at the "Fixture List", this humungous list of English cricket clubs is checked and updated on a regular basis. The Australian ANTS site has a listing containing UK cricket club sites NEW! plus another one listing other worldwide cricket club sites. NEW!

MELTON MOBRAY C.C. Melton Mowbray is famous for Pork Pies, a local cheese and having 26 pubs to stagger between! The "fun" section features a "Trumps" game using players statistics based on six categories, including drinking ability. Hmmm!

ELTHORNE C.C. new url We've played this lot for a number of years now. We think the sense of humour is down to our level...

WINNINGTON PARK C.C. Founded in 1890 WPCCs' main objective is to promote cricket to everyone, the desire for success comes a close second!!! They have compiled a three year plan to improve the facilities and surroundings of the club.

CROWLAND C.C. Crowland is situated in the Fenland area West of East Anglia and play in the Rutland League. Practice start at around 18:30 and continue until dark or thirsty, whichever is sooner. Ideal! If you email them they say they will reply, but cannot guarantee to be coerh, er, cerrohe, er, coherent.

HAWORTH WEST END Our cousins in Yorkshire - with lovely views of the area for god measure.

BRIGHTON BEAMERS C.C. NEW SITE The BBCC was formed by two noble statesmen of Beamerhood around the beginning of the 1980's. They have about 20 playing members, and 5 fans, tour twice a year, drink real ale, sing songs, camp camply, and generally enjoy themselves. Great site, check out their humour!

GUTTSTA WICKED C.C. Formed 1989, also taking the first step in forming the Swedish Cricket Federation. In 1992 went on 3 match tour to Bath, England. Won the Swedish Championship in 1993 and represented Sweden in the European Cup in 1994 on Corfu, Greece.

WORPLESDON & BURPHAM CC's NEW!

CRICINFO This site contains just about everything you need to know in the domestic game through to international level. Runs individual pages dedicated to various cricketing countries and their perspectives plus links to clubs and other organisations. The site was re-launched in late 2003 after merging with the Wisden Online site. Includes the "Googler's Gazette," well worth a read.

EMERGENCY FIXTURES You have to register, but to those who do the site offers fixtures with other clubs when all else may have failed. Players can also be put up looking for a team!

CRICKET COACHING MATS A new concept in "training for the future". This piece of equipment allows concentrated practice and was designed by David Cooper, a registered ECB coach.
